I still need to do a Monkey’s birthday and Christmas post, but had to pop on quickly to note that the Marshmallow started cruising today. At a little over 8 months old. OMG. He will be walking before you know it. Where did my little baby go?

Yes, baby is still fighting sleep like a champ. I definitely think it’s related to his hitting new milestones like crazy lately (sitting up unassisted, crawling, pulling up to standing, cruising, finger foods). We tried using the Sleep Lady technique again at bedtime, but baby cried for an hour and during that hour, he would sit up or stand up at the side of the crib. I tried laying him down each time (over and over and over again) and saying, “Night night.” No dice. After an hour, DW came in and put him to sleep by swaying with him and then patting his butt in the crib. He woke up 2 times before we went to bed (between 6:30PM-10PM), and again when we went to bed. I nursed him at 10PM and he went to sleep until 2AM. Nursed him at 2AM and he was up for the day at 4AM. We tried swaying, butt patting, nursing, etc. at 4AM, but when 5AM rolled around and he still was nowhere near sleepy, I got up with him (annoyed and grumpy as hell). I was ready to try Ferber tonight (CIO with checks), but DW wants to give him another chance since he went 10PM-4AM with 1 wakeup, which is pretty good for him. So I guess we’re in for another sleepless night (I don’t have the same high hopes as DW, but it can’t hurt to try one more night I guess). Argh!
Well, we are right back at the beginning with this sleep training nonsense. Last night, baby woke up every hour and a half starting at 7:30PM (1.5 hours after going to sleep). Around 12:30, I gave up and brought him into bed. I got no sleep at all and he was up for the day at 4:30AM. Nap times today were terrible – he only slept half an hour at each one. Bedtime tonight he cried for almost an hour (we went in and checked on him about 3 times during that hour) and I finally gave up and patted his butt until he went to sleep. I don’t even know what to do at this point.
Well, I spoke too soon. Yes, baby will go to sleep with little fuss in the evenings, but overnights are sucking hardcore. It looks something like this:
- ~6PM: Sleep
- ~10PM: Wake (nurse and put back in crib)
- ~1:30AM: Wake (try not to nurse, but after close to an hour of LOUD yelling and crying, give in and nurse, put back in crib)
- ~3AM: Wake (nurse because I don’t want another hour of screaming, put back in crib)
- ~5AM: Wake (nurse and let him stay in bed as he’ll sleep for another hour this way)
- ~6:30AM: Up for the day
It’s been like this for the last couple of nights and I think I give up on the overnight training for now. I’m going to go back to just getting him and nursing him and putting him back in the crib when he cries. When that gets out of hand, which it will, we’ll be back in this spot. Until he’s out of our bedroom, I don’t see how we can do the overnight training. He is more persistent than he was the first time we did this and also much LOUDER! It’s insane.
Nap training, however, is going well. He has had his last 2 days of naps in his crib. Yesterday we were down to 2 naps (finally). Of course today we have a family member’s baby shower to attend, so will be disrupting the training with that.
Yeah, I’m feeling pretty defeated in the sleep training department right now.
I was going to write this post yesterday and lament how S has slid back into some old bad habits (waking multiple times in the night, taking forever to go to sleep, up at 4:30-5:00AM). But we went back to the old sleep training last night (cried hard for about 25 minutes and I gave in and patted his butt until he fell asleep). Tonight, however, there was no crying and no butt patting – he just rolled onto his belly, stuck his butt in the air, and went right to sleep! Woohoo! Let’s hope this trend continues! We’ll see how he does over night and in the morning before I declare victory, but it’s a start.
We also started naptime sleep training today. Both times he cried hard for 5 minutes, DW went in to comfort him, he cried hard for another 5 minutes, and then went to sleep. Both naps were fairly short (40 minutes), but oftentimes he wasn’t going much longer than that when napping in DW’s arms. We’re hoping he’ll drop a nap once he gets the crib sleeping down (right now he does a short nap around 8, another nap at noon, and one at 3). I’ll keep you posted on how he progresses.
